We all need a place to call home – a place where we can gather with family and friends to experience love and friendship and share life together.
Our home is the place we find peace and security, comfort and beauty, rest and refreshment. It is that safe place we can be ourselves and do life with those we love. It is a place we fill with our own character and most loved things. By adding layers of colour, texture and shape we make this space beautiful. But even more importantly, by bringing to this space qualities of love, kindness and joy – we make this space sing.
What begins as ‘bricks and mortar’ transforms into something of great significance that by far surpasses the structure itself. In the famous words of Daryl Kerrigan, ‘It’s not just a house, it’s a home!” The meaningfulness of our home does not emerge from its size but from its significance and this significance is something most of us have probably taken for granted because from our earliest memories we have enjoyed a place called home, a place we go out from, prepared and eager to face the larger world, and then a place to return to for rest, refuge and refreshment. When we stop to really think about it, we discover just how important our home is to us and therefore how important a home must also be to other people around the world.
Home for a Home is dedicated to making a difference in the lives of those people who are struggling in poverty and who lack the basic necessity of shelter and a place they can transform into a home. In conjunction with our work building houses in Australia, we seek to build well-constructed and beautiful houses for those who don’t have one, so they can write their own story of community, friendship, learning, and delight. And it is into this space that they bring all their own God-given inner potential to love and serve each other in a thousand different ways and to share their best memories with those they love. In so doing they transform this physical space into a sanctuary that for them truly becomes a home for their children and loved ones.
